Rhinitis

Case history

12-year-old girl with constant nasal obstruction. She has been healthy throughout childhood except for mild eczema during infancy. She has always had a tendency to catch colds very easily. During the last half year she seems to be chronically congested and often complains of irritated, itchy eyes, especially in the mornings.

Physical examination

Slightly inflamed conjunctivae. Pale blue nasal mucosa.

Suspected diagnosis

Infection? Allergy? Non-specific nasal hyperresponsiveness?

Diagnosis & follow-up

Laboratory results showed a positive ImmunoCAP® Phadiatop® and IgE antibodies (ImmunoCAP®) to house dust mites. Removal of the carpet and wall hangings in the girl's bedroom and using allergen-protective bed covers have practically eliminated her problems.
