Hints for avoiding allergens

House Dust Mite

  • Special mattress covers.
  • Remove carpet from (bed) rooms.
  • Remove upholstered furniture.
  • Low humidity in the house (< 50%).
  • Replace plush cuddly toys with allergen free cuddly toys.

Pollen

  • In the pollen season: keep doors and windows closed as much as possible.
     
  • Don't dry the laundry outside, but if possible in the dryer.
     
  • Try to minimize outside activities during high pollen concentrations.
     
  • Watch the television for the weather forecast for hay fever patients. 
     
  • Look on the internet www.pollenuk.co.uk for the latest data on pollen counting or look at the pollen calendar

Pets

  • Avoid contact with cats and dogs as much as possible.  
     
  • If other animals are causing the symptoms, the same advice is applied

Food

  • Avoid the food that gives an allergic reaction. 
     
  • Read carefully the labels on foods for the content of products.
     
  • Be aware of 'hidden' allergens: 
      - cow's milk and peanut in ice cream
      - nuts in cookies
      - peanut oil in food for babies.
